MALE — Guests cannow sleep beneath the waves while contributing to the environment. The 'Aquos' resort, which opened last month, is the world's first fully carbon-neutral underwater hotel. Located 15 feet below the surface of a protected lagoon, the hotel doubles as a massive coral nursery. The resort uses the ambient heat generated by its guests and kitchen systems to power coral growth incubators that surround the guest suites. "We wanted to prove that luxury travel can be regenerative," says lead architect Sarah Chen. Windows are made of a new, ultra-strong bio-glass that resists algae buildup, providing crystal-clear views of the rehabilitating reef. A portion of every night's stay goes directly toward reef restoration projects, making it a popular choice for the eco-conscious elite.
